In the last few years, players who have departed Anfield – sometimes for ‘greener pastures’ have ended up becoming shadows of the players they were at Liverpool.
Sadio Mane’s move to Bayern Munich in 2022 for £35 million highlighted this trend.
Despite his impressive Liverpool record of 120 goals in 269 games and finishing second in the Ballon d’Or rankings in his final 21/22 campaign – he struggled in Germany and is no longer at the highest playing level with Al Nassr in Saudi Arabia.
Georginio Wijnaldum’s free transfer to Paris Saint-Germain after leaving Liverpool also proved disappointing.
The midfielder opted against extending his Anfield contract, choosing instead to join PSG.
While PSG made a better financial offer than other suitors, with Mauricio Pochettino’s presence influencing his decision6, the move failed to replicate his Liverpool success.
He is also now in Suadi under the management of Steven Gerrard at El Ettifaq.
And one former forgotten Liverpool man now also continues this trend with the latest transfer update coming today.
Former Liverpool man Arthur Melo is still at Juventus, but it would hardly seem so judging by how many loan moves the Brazilian keeps having.
After his disappointing loan spell at Liverpool in the 2022/23 season, where he made just one appearance totaling 13 minutes due to physical condition problems he spent time on loan at Fiorentina in the 2023/24 campaign.
This move to Fiorentina provided Arthur with more playing opportunities compared to his brief and unsuccessful spell at Liverpool, where the Reds had paid €4.5 million in loan fees and had an option to purchase him for €37.5 million.
And now still out of favour at Juventus, as he was when Liverpool picked him up now three years ago, Arthur is set for another journeyman move.
Fabrizio Romano has reported that the 28-year-old is in talks to join Neymar at Santos this January.
Taking to X, the transfer reporter wrote:
“Understand Santos are in advanced talks to sign Arthur Melo on loan deal from Juventus.”
“The agreement for former Liverpool midfielder would also include a buy option clause.”
“Arthur, open to joining Santos with Neymar coming too.”
Despite his poor stint at Anfield, Arthur spoke in glowing terms about how he was treated by Jurgen Klopp in particular, noting that the German ‘stayed close to him’ and gave Melo a sense of ‘trust.
