Brighton defender Joel Veltman has revealed the Liverpool inspiration that helped his side overcome Chelsea in the FA Cup.
It’s fair to say that it was not the best weekend for England’s traditional ‘top six’ clubs.
The Reds suffered a stunning 1-0 defeat to Plymouth Argyle, who currently sit at the bottom of the Championship13.
The upset occurred at Home Park, with Ryan Hardie scoring the decisive goal from the penalty spot in the 53rd minute.
Tottenham Hotspur joined the list of eliminated top six clubs, losing 2-1 to Aston Villa.
Jacob Ramsey scored within the first minute, and Morgan Rogers added a second goal in the 64th minute.
Despite a late goal from new signing Mathys Tel, Spurs couldn’t salvage the tie, exiting their second cup competition in four days after their Carabao Cup semi-final loss to Liverpool.
While Manchester City managed to progress to the fifth round, they faced a significant scare against League One side Leyton Orient.
City fell behind in the 16th minute due to an own goal and needed goals from Abdukodir Khusanov and Kevin De Bruyne to secure a 2-1 victory.
But Brighton’s Joel Veltman has revealed that it was one Liverpool player that actually aided their efforts against the Blues.
What did Joel Veltman say about Trent Alexander-Arnold?
Chelsea also crashed out of the FA Cup after a 2-1 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion.
Despite taking an early lead through an own goal, Chelsea conceded twice, with Kaoru Mitoma scoring the winner.
This loss leaves Chelsea with only the UEFA Conference League as a realistic chance for silverware this season.
And Veltman namechecked Trent Alexander-Arnold as his inspiration after delivering a pinpoint cross to the head of Georgino Rutter for the Seagulls’ equalizer
“We trained on this,” said Veltman to Sussex World after the victory against Chelsea.
“And I think it’s really difficult to defend those passes back and then straight after, a cross.”
“Trent Alexander Arnold, I was watching him doing it.
So, yeah, we’ll see who we draw and go for it.”
The assist did have Alexander-Arnold all over it, delivering a perfect cross first time from that inside right channel, not quite by the touchline to add a different angle to the delivery.
And furthermore, Veltman’s studying seems to be positively influencing his output, providing two assists in as many appearances in the FA Cup this season.
