Liverpool is set to host Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield in the second leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final, with the Reds aiming to overturn a 1-0 deficit from the first leg.

Ange Postecoglou will look to build on the momentum from their recent Brentford win and secure a spot in the Carabao Cup final for the first time since 2021.

Tottenham has bolstered their squad with the signings of Kevin Danso on loan from Lens and Mathys Tel, also on loan from Bayern Munich.

Tel’s deal includes a potential permanent transfer for £45 million if the option is exercised.

These signings are part of Tottenham’s efforts to strengthen their team, especially with injuries affecting key players.

But with the semi-final bout rapidly approaching, many are wondering if Tel is eligible to face the Reds at Anfield on Thursday.

Can Mathys Tel play against Liverpool?

Mathys Tel is expected to be eligible to play against Liverpool in the Carabao Cup  –  so long as his work permit and international clearance is processed expeditiously.

Unlike competitions like the UEFA Champions League, the Carabao Cup does not require teams to register a limited squad.

The rules governing player eligibility in the Carabao Cup are outlined in the EFL regulations.

Specifically, Rule 6.1 states that a player must be a “Registered Player” of their club to participate in a Competition Match.

Rule 6.2 defines a Registered Player as one who would be eligible to participate in a Premier League or League match at the same time, following the Premier League Rules and League Regulations

As long as a player is registered for their club’s league, they are considered a registered player for the Carabao Cup.

Since Tel has not played in the competition for another club this season, he is not cup-tied.

The only potential issue could arise if Bayern Munich, Tel’s parent club, does not provide written consent for him to play.

However, given that Bayern has no interest in the Carabao Cup, it is unlikely they would object.

This rule is primarily aimed at preventing conflicts when English clubs loan players to other teams within the same competition.

Speaking at his unveiling, the U21 French international profiled himself:

“I’m a physical player, fast.

I play every moment of every game with my heart?

I’m ready to play, I’m here, I’m ready to grow.

It was the best option for me and now I’m very happy?

I felt the commitment, I spoke with the President, the team manager, the coach and as I said, that was very important for me.”
