Considering both Bayern Munich and Real Madrid needed play-offs to get through and Manchester City aren't competing in the last-16 of the Champions League for the first time under Pep Guardiola, it's hard to say no.

UEFA promised more big match-ups and increased jeopardy as a selling point for the new format, and while at times it's felt a little bloated, overall the revamped league phase and play-off round appear to have worked a treat.

The proof for football fans will be in the knockout pudding though.



That's where the usual drama comes from in the Champions League, but because of the new seeding system, there's every chance the big boys enjoy an easier time of things.
