Able to point to a flourishing academy and a plethora of starlets who had enjoyed senior action under Jurgen Klopp, it has seemingly been a straight-forward sell for club bosses.

Last month, the ECHO reported that Liverpool were closing in on the signing of 16-year-old Wolves wonderkid Alvin Ayman, having brought in Trey Nyoni and Amara Nallo from Leicester City and West Ham United respectively last summer.

Prior to that, Bobby Clark and Ben Doak were snapped up from Newcastle United and Celtic for £1.5million and £600,000 respectively, Kaide Gordon was bought from Derby County for a fee that may rise to £3m, and Calum Scanlon was signed from Birmingham City for £400,000.

But Liverpool could be about to pull off their most eye-catching academy transfer coup yet.

The Reds are reportedly set to sign Rio Ngumoha from Chelsea, though the Daily Mail has disputed suggestions that they are set to break their wage structure in order to secure a move for the 15-year-old sensation.

The left-winger has previously trained with the Chelsea first team and made nine appearances for their Under-18s last season, while he also featured for the Under-21s in the English Premier League Cup.

Yet HITC reported that Chelsea had been confident of retaining the teenager’s services.

But the Londoners are now said to be ‘furious’ at the prospect of losing the 15-year-old to Liverpool, with HITC claiming sources are ‘astonished’ and ‘angry’ over the deal.

Chelsea have consistently spent big money on youngsters under Todd Boehly’s ownership.

This has seemingly been the case with Ngumoha, with the Mail claiming he has in part been motivated by the pathway and opportunities on offer at Liverpool.

In truth, the 15-year-old only needs to look back at recent meetings between the two sides to justify his decision of trading Stamford Bridge for Anfield.

Conor Bradley scored on his full Premier League debut for Liverpool against Chelsea back in January, while starlets Doak and Clark both came off the bench in the two English top-flight meetings between the two sides.

But that was nothing compared to the League Cup final in February as the Reds’ academy enjoyed its finest hour.

Bradley would again start, joining former youngsters Caoimhin Kelleher and Harvey Elliott in Klopp’s starting XI at Wembley.

Meanwhile, Clark, Jarell Quansah, James McConnell and Jayden Danns all came off the bench, while Trey Nyoni and Lewis Koumas were also part of a matchday squad that featured nine past and present Liverpool academy players.

Admittedly such opportunities came in the face of an injury crisis with fellow former academy stars Trent Alexander-Arnold and Curtis Jones just two of a number of high-profile players ruled out of the trip to Wembley.

After Liverpool reported back for the start of pre-season last Friday, the Dutchman has already enjoyed a closer look at a host of the club’s young talents.

While Ngumoha might have to wait a little while longer for his first taste of senior action with Liverpool, he will be well aware that Doak and Nyoni both made their first team debuts for the Reds as 16 year olds just months after joining the club in the previous two summers, while Nallo was named in senior matchday squads.
