The management game has not been an easy one to break into for former Liverpool players.
Xabi Alonso aside, those who have tried their luck on the other side of the touchline have struggled to make a real impact.
Perhaps none quite typify this as much as legendary former captain Steven Gerrard.
Gerrard was supposed to be the heir apparent to Jurgen Klopp at Anfield.
But when Klopp left last summer, the 44-year-old was nowhere near the running.
Instead, Gerrard was slumming it out in the Saudi Pro League, struggling to get a tune out of Dammam side Al Ettifaq.
And after 18 months of failing to make the grade, one of greatest players in Liverpool history has decided to call it a day in the Middle East.

It was never supposed to be this way.

Despite Gerrard struggling to make his mark on the Saudi Pro League, you’d imagine that he will still be of interest to clubs back in England.
The former England captain has pedigree having won the Scottish title undefeated with Rangers and the pull of his name will likely attract lower division clubs.

As seen by the likes of Frank Lampard and Wayne Rooney continuing to get work, Gerrard will surely not be short of offers.
In our opinion, it would be amazing to see Gerrard back at Anfield in whatever capacity is possible.
But with his coaching ambitions likely to still burn brightly, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him land another job instead.
