It appears that Ruud van Nistelrooy may have jumped the gun when he criticized Cody Gakpo's decision to join Liverpool.

Just six matches into the Dutch forward's tenure at Anfield, Van Nistelrooy suggested that Gakpo had made a mistake by choosing Liverpool over Manchester United.

He wanted Gakpo to choose United.



He claimed Gakpo wanted to join United, but ultimately, he signed for Liverpool.

"As far as I know, Gakpo has always dreamed of playing for Manchester United and he was in talks with Erik ten Hag since August," Van Nistelrooy revealed in February 2023.

"I also wanted him to play for United, but the club didn't make an offer in January.

"When I heard about Liverpool, I discussed it with him and told him to wait until the summer.

Instead, he's thriving at Anfield under another bald Dutch tactician—Arne Slot, not Ten Hag—with 16 goals to his name for Liverpool this term.

Should Gakpo increase his tally on Sunday, edging Liverpool closer to the title and potentially relegating Leicester in the process, Van Nistelrooy might just rue the missed opportunity of seeing him in a United shirt.
