Cody Gakpo has explained why he seems to flourish in the Carabao Cup.
The Dutchman has become something of a cup specialist for Liverpool since his arrival in the winter of 2023.
Since his arrival, Gakpo has scored nine goals in eleven appearances for the Reds in the League Cup.
This means that he is averaging about 75 minutes per goal in the competition, far ahead of his Liverpool teammates.
This season, he scored four goals in his first two Carabao Cup games, with his total of five goals and one assist in the competition, helping Liverpool reach the final for the second time in two seasons.
Liverpool face Newcastle United in the final, and a win will give Arne Slot his first title as Reds boss while extending the Reds’ win in the competition to a record eleven League Cup trophies.
Ahead of the final at Wembley on Sunday, Gakpo was about his apparent knack for scoring in the competition, and he explained that the fact that he was starting more in the League Cup gave him a higher chance of scoring than in the other competitions.
“I think it’s a coincidence,” he told the Liverpool Echo.
“I think also last season, obviously, those also were the games I played almost like 90 minutes, so the chance to score in them is a little bit higher.
“This season, also the first two games in the League Cup, because I wasn’t starting in the Premier League, those were also the games I played, and in the first two, I scored four already.
“So it’s a coincidence, but it’s nice to score, so it doesn’t matter what the competition is.”
Gakpo is expected to start against Newcastle United on Sunday after returning to full fitness following a recent minor injury concern.
