Cody Gakpo is enjoying his best season at Liverpool so far.
The Dutch forward currently has 16 goals and 6 assists in 44 games so far this season, by far his most impressive return since arriving in England.
Struggling during his first two seasons at Liverpool, as Jurgen Klopp failed to find his ideal place in the team, Cody Gakpo has flourished under Arne Slot.
Predominantly being deployed in his preferred position, left-wing, Gakpo has played with the same sharpness and confidence that we came so used to seeing when he was playing for PSV prior to his move to Merseyside.
Despite having the best season so far in a Reds shirt, the battle to hold down the left-wing spot in the team has proved difficult given the quality of his competitor – Luis Diaz.
Both players have proved their worth, and Gakpo has suffered injuries at crucial points throughout the season, gifting Diaz with more opportunities in recent weeks as Liverpool close in on the Premier League title.
Looking ahead to Sunday’s game against Tottenham Hotspur, where Liverpool need just one point from the game to be crowned champions, Cody Gakpo has given his thoughts on just how much winning the league would mean to him.
“When you start football and you get knowledge about the leagues in Europe, I think everybody can agree that the Premier League is one of if not the best league in Europe and the world.”
“To become hopefully a Premier League winner is every footballer’s dream at some point in life.
That would be an amazing achievement.”
Liverpool have held a commanding lead at the top of the Premier League for some time now.
The same cannot be said for Spurs, who have suffered a miserable campaign up until this point.
Ange Postecoglou’s side see themselves currently in 16th place, having lost 18 games so far this season.
However, the London side do see themselves in a Europa League semi-final and therefore could look to rotate for their trip to Anfield, with their season lying on that tie.
If Spurs were to go on to win the competition, they would see themselves return to Champions League football next season.
Liverpool will facing off against Spurs for the fourth time this season, after the two sides met in the Carabao Cup semi-final.
Cody Gakpo has given his thoughts on the game, urging his team to not be complacent.
“It’s not a game that you say.
That’s with every team in the league.
We have to get in there and put in a good performance.”
