Liverpool fans know all too well how tough a Premier League title race can be.
Memories of past heartbreaks, especially in 2019 and 2022, still linger.
Despite coming so close, Manchester City edged them out both times.
Even in 2020, when the Reds finally ended their 30-year wait for a league title, they had to deal with a three-month break due to the pandemic before lifting the trophy.
Last season was another tough pill to swallow.
Injuries piled up, key players were missing, and the team couldn’t keep up the momentum.
By the end, Liverpool found themselves outside the top four, missing out on Champions League football.
Now, though, the Reds are in a much better position.
They sit at the top of the table, and for once, Manchester City are not the dominant force they once were.
But while fans are hopeful, the squad knows they can’t afford to relax just yet.
What did Cody Gakpo say Liverpool ‘cannot lie’ about?
Cody Gakpo has been in fine form this season, scoring 16 goals in 38 appearances.
As Liverpool push towards a record-equalling 20th league title, the Dutch forward opened up about one key difference in this year’s title race.
“We know we’re not supposed to look at them in a way that makes us think ‘oh, if they win, we have to win’ or that we have to win every game,” Gakpo said in an exclusive interview with the Liverpool Echo.
“But, obviously, we cannot lie if we say that we haven’t noticed City are a little bit more struggling compared to recent years.”
It’s a rare situation.
For years, City have been relentless, forcing Liverpool to be almost perfect to have a chance.
This season, however, Pep Guardiola’s side has looked more vulnerable, dropping points and battling inconsistency.
Gakpo knows that the key for Liverpool is staying focused on their own performances.
“It is how it is, and we have to just stay focused on ourselves and try to keep winning every game because everybody knows how hard it can be, and every game is a difficult one,” he explained.
With 10 games left, Liverpool need a maximum of seven wins to secure the title?
Gakpo and his teammates are determined to finish the job.
“We have to win as many games as possible and then hopefully we win the title at the end.”
