Cody Gakpo has pinpointed the result that ‘confirmed’ that Liverpool can do something special under Arne Slot.
Liverpool and Slot have looked like a perfect match since the Dutchman arrived at Anfield.
Replacing a larger-than-life manager like Jurgen Klopp was always going to be tough, and it was expected that Slot would struggle in his first season in the Premier League.
After all, the former Feyenoord coach was coming into a new league, and he was replacing Klopp, who had been at Liverpool for nine years.
However, Slot has not only performed well, but he has also exceeded expectations.
Liverpool are flying high under the 46-year-old, who has overseen 27 wins in 34 games for Liverpool so far, which has resulted in the Reds sitting at the top of the Premier League and Champions League tables.
Speaking about Slot’s surprising start to life at Liverpool, Cody Gakpo, who has enjoyed a new lease of life under the coach, has revealed the one game that made him believe that the club will do well under Slot.
What Cody Gakpo said
Speaking to the Players Tribune in a special feature ahead of Liverpool’s clash with boyhood club PSV, Cody Gakpo first admitted that the expectation of most of the outside world about Slot and Liverpool was low.
“I don’t think the outside world really expected much from us at the beginning of this season if I’m being honest,” he said.
“Because last season’s story was we were great until the last 10 games, and then we messed it up.
Then, slowly but surely, we really felt confident in how Slot wanted us to play.”
The attacker then highlighted Liverpool’s win against Manchester United at Old Trafford as a confirmation that the team had mastered Slot’s style.
“The first games we were flying,” we added.
