Cody Gakpo has highlighted just how Arne Slot has managed to transform his fortunes at Anfield after an admittedly middling 2023/24 campaign.
The Dutch forward struggled to find consistency in the 2023/24 season as he was often deployed in various positions across the front line, rather than his preferred left-wing role.
This positional uncertainty seemed to impact Gakpo’s performances, as he managed 8 goals and 5 assists in 35 Premier League appearances.
Many fans and pundits pointed to the fact that Gakpo was hardly utilized in his favoured left-wing position, with Jurgen Klopp preferring Luis Diaz down that flank.
But this term, the Dutch international has impressed with a tally of 14 goals and 4 assists in just 32 appearances across all competitions.
This translates to a goal contribution every 100 minutes on average.
The Dutch forward’s current form represents a substantial leap from the previous season, where he found the net 16 times in 53 matches.
And now, Cody Gakpo has confirmed what most Liverpool fans have always thought about the 25-year-old.
What did Gody Gakpo say about Arne Slot?
Speaking to the Players Tribune in a special feature ahead of Liverpool’s clash with boyhood club PSV, Cody Gakpo first explained how Arne Slot’s tactics differ to Jurgen Klopp’s:
“This process, of course, started under Klopp.
You can talk to him about football, life, anything,” the Dutch international began.
“He’s so good tactically, and I think we fit well in his system.
If you look at our midfield — Curtis, Ryan, Dominik, Wataru, Elliot, Alexis — they’re all complete midfielders.
“They can do it all: Run, win duels, and find each other between the lines.
“With Klopp we would more often play a long ball and then fight, but now that we’re playing with more patience, and shorter passes, you can fully see how much quality our midfield has.”
Gakpo then revealed his delight at being put back in the left-wing position, admitting that the central role experiment did just not work:
“I’m back on the left wing.
I think that the biggest thing Slot did for my game is put me back in that position instead of playing in a more central role.”
“Basically, it’s all in the details.
