Liverpool Legends saw off Chelsea thanks to Peter Crouch’s second-half double.

Saturday’s LFC Foundation charity match saw both clubs go toe to toe to mark the 20th anniversary of their historic Champions League semi-final meeting at Anfield.

Steven Gerrard led a Reds’ side featuring several members from that class of 2005 including Jerzy Dudek, Sami Hyypia, Igor Biscan, Djbril Cisse and Florent Sinama-Pongolle.

Chelsea ventured to L4 with a strong selection with Claude Makelele, Gianfranco Zola and Eidur Gudjohnsen among their available players for this encounter.

Natasha Dowie made history by becoming the first women’s player to feature in a Legends fixture for Liverpool while Katie Chapman did similar for the Blues.

But it was Crouch who stole the show on his first appearance in this fixture with two goals in front of a sold-out The Kop, first heading home before a chipped follow-up.

Sander Westerveld, who was called into action early in replacing an injured Dudek after 18 minutes, admitted that he still struggles with nerves for the fundraiser.

“I’m always nervous for these kinds of games because I don’t know how fit I am,” he told Click Liverpool.

“In my head, I’m still the 28-year-old that played here but when there’s a low ball and my head thinks like I’m gonna dive quickly and my body goes so slow.

“So always I’m very nervous during the game.

If I can make a save once or twice then I’m extra happy, but of course it’s all about the Foundation.

“It’s all about the sold-out crowd and the stadium so it’s been a perfect day.”

He added: “I got a cartilage problem on my knee, so I can’t really prepare.

“I can’t train so that’s why I’m always nervous because I don’t know how fit I am every year and until now in the last eight games I played every time in the last whistle goes, I was like ‘phew, that was okay today again’.

“But while I’m able to do this kind of games and help the Foundation help the people here, I’ll do everything I can to play these matches.”
