Crucial Summer of change is Arne Slot’s biggest challenge yet

The commanding manner in which Liverpool won the Premier League has led the focus to shift on the other narratives surrounding the club.

It’s bizarre to have a league title basically wrapped up with 9 games to go but the noise from many media outlets be concentrated on the issues of the outgoings and incomings of the squad rather than how brilliant Liverpool have been.

It’s part and parcel when a team is on top.

All the issues regardless of how small are magnified, but it doesn’t help that the issue of the team’s three best players contractual situations looms as the unresolved elephant in the room.

The problem Arne Slot has from now until the end of the season is handling questions of such a nature and keeping the team focused.

The Dutchman’s tweaks have been excellent, but he benefited from the squad Jurgen Klopp built.

From the team Klopp had that took their title challenge deep in 23/24, Slot was able to see what worked, what didn’t and adjust from there.

But come the summer, the former Feyenoord manager will have to deal with getting the summer transfer market correct and aiming to bed players in whilst adapting to the ones he will get rid of.

Team Chemistry

Slot’s strength this season lies in maximising Mohamed Salah.

That may seem simplistic, but I assure you it wasn’t easy and may get more difficult.

The relationships formed between Salah and Alexander-Arnold, as well as Luis Diaz’s role in the team and even Darwin Nunez’s ‘super-sub’ role, meant that at each phase of the game, Liverpool knew what they had to do.

Players would run off Salah and dart in behind, or Diaz would drop deep and drag a defender with him.

Whilst there is speculation on who may leave from the forward line, nothing is confirmed yet, and though Liverpool have depth, there are many players ultimately competing for two spots, as Salah is always a starter if fit.

Change too much, and it could upset the rhythm; change too little, and there may be stagnation.

We already saw in the Carabao Cup final what this Liverpool team looks like without Alexander-Arnold in the side, if the English full-back is to leave, it will need a brilliant signing to do so.

Liverpool’s attack has been devastating this season.

As Slot looks to possibly freshen up the forward line, the crucial aspect he has to take care of is if he is to sign new players or let go of any in the side, the chemistry in the attack can’t suffer.

In the Premier League, especially, it’s always difficult for new players to adapt.

Volatile Transfer Market

It feels unfair that the biggest challenge Arne Slot faces so far in his Liverpool tenure is likely going to be out of his hands.

He will definitely have a say and work together with the Liverpool recruitment team and directors to deduce how to freshen the squad up but ultimately, the transfer market is a different beast to deal with entirely.

We all remember the remarkable manner in which Chelsea behaved to sign Moises Caicedo after Liverpool had a bid accepted.

When you’re competing with other powerhouse clubs that have large sums of cash, there is no guarantee you’ll get the target you want at the price you want.

Liverpool in the market this summer, if they are to look for reinforcements, will have to manage getting the right players at the right price with the right profile.

We’ve seen Manchester City as a brilliant example; if you get one or two windows wrong, the level of stagnation after could be costly.

Pep Guardiola and Man City are now having to wait to rebuild a whole new team and in the process could yet lose being in the Champions League next season.

Liverpool will want anything but this to happen and whilst City’s situation is more so because key players physically have slowed down, they’d want to make sure not too much changes if they are to recruit.

The excellent work of the 24/25 season from Slot and everyone else should not be taken for granted.

It should be acknowledged and appreciated.

What happens next this summer, however, could be more important than his first season in charge.

For the Dutch manager and his Liverpool team for the 24/25 season, the serious business starts now.
