Curtis Jones has clarified some his previous comments on Jurgen Klopp and the differences between the German’s playstyle and tactics compared to Arne Slot.
The 23-year-old was in action against Arsenal last night and will look to continue to make progress on what was a good 2023/24 season – easily his best campaign in a Liverpool shirt.
Speaking ahead of the Real Betis clash, the midfielder was quizzed on tactics:
“It’s probably the happiest I’ve been in terms of a style of play that suits me and the lads that we have in our team,” Jones said he was asked about tactical differences under Arne Slot.
“It’s a clear plan.
In the training stuff, he is fully involved, he coaches us a lot, he is big on the finer details in things”
He was also asked about the differences in the pressing systems employed by both managers, which is where the misinterpretation started to seep in:
“I feel more in the past it was kind of like a rush, we’d get the ball back and it was a little bit too direct I would say, it was up and down, up and down.”
“I always had a way of playing [but] I had to adapt, that was part of the plan.
I can get on the ball more, I can do me more.”
Of course, as soon as a player starts speaking like this, the media will latch on and create their own insinuations and angles.
But it was Jurgen Klopp who handed the young Scouser his first-team debut in January 2019 during an FA Cup match against Wolves.
Since then, Jones has racked up over 106 appearances for the club – and was trusted by the German all the way through the criticism.
Jones’ quotes have led to some wild headlines, with some outlets running headlines that read ‘I’m glad Klopp’s gone’.
What did Curtis Jones say about the Jurgen Klopp misunderstanding?
The Redmen TV caught up with Curtis Jones in the mixed-interview zone after the 2-1 victory over Arsenal last night.
The 23-year-old was quizzed on the game and how Slot setup the team, and then used the opportunity to clear the air on his previous comments
“The principles are always the same; we want to work hard, press, and dominate teams,” Jones began.
“That’s what I think came across a little bit wrong, [which is why] I’d like to say on this now, I’ve seen things that it seemed like I was disrespectful in a way.
“But Jurgen knows I’d never be that kid.
He knows how much I love him, that I love all of his staff.
“But it was just me saying that how I’m going to play now is a little bit of a change.”
He added:
“He gave me the platform and belief in myself to know that I’m a kid who can step up as well, I’m not just a kid who’s a squad lad, I can really be counted on as well.”
“I don’t want to take anything away from him?
I didn’t mean any harm and he knows how much love I have for him and his staff.”
