Curtis Jones has reacted to his impressive showing at right back during Liverpool’s game against Everton on Wednesday.

Liverpool continued their march towards their 20th league title with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Everton on Wednesday.

In their first game since the Carabao Cup defeat to Newcastle United, a second-half goal from Diogo Jota gave a dominant Liverpool side the win, bringing the Toffees’ nine-match unbeaten league run to an abrupt halt.

The game was the 246th iteration of the Merseyside derby, and Liverpool ensured that it went their way, unlike the last time they met at Goodison Park.

James Tarkowski, who scored the heartbreaking equaliser in the last game, was lucky to play the full 90 minutes on Tuesday after escaping a red card for a leg-breaking tackle on Alexis Mac Allister in the 10th minute.

Arne Slot named a surprising XI for the game against Everton, with Curtis Jones asked to play in the right-back position, given the absence of Trent Alexander-Arnold and Conor Bradley.

The No.

17 put in a decent shift in his new unorthodox defensive position.

Speaking about playing in the new position, Jones revealed that while he would prefer to play in his favoured position in midfield, he was more than happy to help the team.

“It was just one of those things I say all the time – at the end of the day, I’m a footballer,” he said.

“Of course I want to play eight or 10 – or false nine or off the left or anything like that – [but] I just want to go and play and help the team as much as I can.

“As I said, of course I want to play eight or 10 or even six, but there are lads in there who are doing a fantastic job, so I’ve just got to wait for my chance.

I respect that, and I just always wait until he needs me.”

He added: “They were going long all the time, so I was finding myself at the back a lot, at the back post, and I was clearing things, I was stopping shots and crosses and things like that.

“That’s part of the game and part of a right-back as well.

He has trusted me in there, so I have to do a job.”

With the win, Liverpool now needs three more wins and a draw from their remaining eight league games to secure the Premier League title?

They are back in action on Sunday, with a game against Fulham.

Meanwhile, Everton have a chance to help Liverpool towards winning the title earlier, as they take on Arsenal in the next game.
