Curtis Jones has highlighted the key difference between Arne Slot and Jurgen Klopp after Liverpool’s win over Manchester City on Sunday.
Liverpool secured a massive 2-0 win over Manchester City at the weekend, tightening their grip on the title initiative.
The Reds now sit eleven points clear at the top of the table, albeit with a game more played.
In beating City, Slot became the first manager in history to beat Pep Guardiola home and away in the league in the same season.
The Dutchman also did something Jurgen Klopp failed to do in the Guardiola era,; beating Manchester City at the Etihad.
Slot secured the win despite playing without a recognised striker.
With Cody Gakpo and Diogo Jota not fully back to fitness, the Liverpool manager decided to tweak his formation, playing both Dominik Szoboszlai and Curtis Jones as advanced midfielders, who also doubled as false nines.
Both players had a good game against City, with Szoboszlai finding the back of the net and registering the assist for Liverpool’s first goal.
The Hungarian also assisted Jones for a third Liverpool goal, but the goal was ruled out for a marginal offside.
Curtis Jones reveals difference between Slot and Klopp
Speaking after the game, Jones was asked about the difference between Klopp’s approach to the game and how Slot approaches it.
He revealed that under Slot, the team tried to hold the ball more and that the team’s plan is often tailored to the opposition.
“Jurgen’s plan was his, and his plan now is his,” Jones said.
“It’s a different style of play.
We want to play more.
“I suppose it’s all the same with how we go and press and things like that, but his is more, the way he’ll speak about the team that’s coming in.
“He’s always got a plan for how they will come and press, how we’ll go and move, and how don’t we go and move the rest of the lads around.
“There’s times when Trent will play inside but you’ve seen him now more where he was playing more outside.”
Jones also revealed that Liverpool’s ability to adapt is a testament to the preparation put in by the staff.
“It’s an individual thing as well,” Jones added.
“We’ve all got our own guys now.
We were talking about the space where I’m finding the ball, he was like, ‘Yeah, that’s the space.
He was saying that I’m good enough to stay more inside and you know, that’s what I’m trying now, and I’m seeing more chances that I’ve had.
“With the balls that I’m playing in, I’ve added more goals and more assists, and I’m just gaining his trust even more, and he’s using me right, so I’m happy, yeah.”
