Curtis Jones has taken his game to another level this season.

Under new boss Arne Slot, he has been a key figure in the team, and his next match will be his 37th of the campaign – the most he has ever managed in a single season.

His development has been clear for all to see, but the foundation for his progress was laid long before Slot arrived.

Jones has been part of Liverpool’s first-team setup for years, but it wasn’t always smooth sailing.

Like many young players, there were times when he questioned his role.

At one point, he even considered going out on loan to gain more experience.

But one person believed in him and kept him at Anfield – Jurgen Klopp.

Jones himself admits how much Klopp shaped his career.

Speaking to The Athletic, he said, “I owe him so much.

Jurgen changed me from a boy to a man.”

There were moments when he thought leaving on loan was the best option.

“There were times when I thought I’d need a loan spell to get more game time but he kept me around the team.”

It wasn’t always easy.

“Yeah, it wasn’t always as easy as I would have wanted it to be because I’m a lad who wants to play.”

But Klopp helped him understand the game on a deeper level.

“Jurgen made me understand the game a lot more from being a kid at the academy who was scoring and assisting all the time and didn’t really have to run.

I could do whatever I wanted.”

Klopp pushed him to improve in all areas.

“The next step was to keep that ability but change stuff like passing the ball even more and the work off the ball.”

Jones was always determined but needed guidance.

“I wasn’t always the best kid, but I wasn’t arrogant or cocky?

I just wanted the best for myself.”

In the end, Klopp was the one who helped him grow.

“He was the man who made me understand so much.”
