Alan Shearer has revealed Dan Burn’s tongue-in-cheek response to the Newcastle legend’s joke about him hanging up his boots.
Burn became a Magpies hero on Sunday with his colossal performance against Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final victory at Wembley.
The towering 6ft 7in star from Blyth, Northumberland, took the lead for Newcastle just before half-time, escaping Alexis Mac Allister and connecting with Kieran Trippier's corner to score a thumping header.
The 32-year-old’s post-match celebrations included a pint with Newcastle icon Shearer, who recalled their conversation on The Rest Is Football podcast.
A jubilant Shearer said: "Where do we start with big Dan Burn?
When I said that he replied [jokingly] 'I might just go [retire] on Friday at Wembley!'"
Shearer continued: “The Newcastle players are all off to Dubai as a team and I said to Dan, ‘it’s typical, you get called into the England squad and you can’t have five or six days break in the sun now'.
I mean it worked perfectly.

“What a header.
He held a season ticket at St James’ Park and even travelled down to Wembley for the FA Cup semi-final defeat to Chelsea in 2000.
Once on the books at Newcastle as a youngster, Burn experienced the sting of being let go by the club one Christmas, aged 11.
