Darwin Nunez has fired a defiant Liverpool message after the Reds got one over on their city rivals Everton.

Diogo Jota's second-half strike was enough for Arne Slot's side to move 12 points clear at the top of the Premier League in a 1-0 win.

The Reds will now travel to Fulham on Sunday looking to make it two wins in two after being forced to stew over a 17-day break which came in light of the deflating run of results against Paris Saint-Germain and Newcastle United.

Nunez hasn't been without his critics this season and emerged as a second-half substitute on Wednesday night.

There was a flashpoint towards the latter stages when the Uruguayan looked to pounce on a loose backpass before he was brought down by Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.

However, referee Sam Barrott had already blown up for a foul on Dominik Szoboszlai who was caught late by Tim Iroebunam in the Liverpool half.

Nunez remained on the ground after the tackle from Pickford and was shown a yellow card for unsportsmanlike behaviour after rolling back onto the pitch to delay the restart.

But the forward has now sent a message to fans following the win.

In a series of posts on Instagram and X, formerly Twitter, he wrote: "Our city, our win!"

Nunez's strike partner, Jota, was the hero on Wednesday as he ended his goal drought with the winner in front of the Kop

Speaking on Thursday, Slot said: "I think one of his most special qualities, is most players if they think they can score, they get mixed up in their head, he stays calm in those moments and knows where he has to shoot and what the goalkeeper might expect.

"He is clam in those moments, Mo is an example too.

"One of Jota's biggest qualities.

He started really well but we missed the best possible Jota for five months, he was out for three or four months and it took him a while to get back and I see that with all our players who've been injured, takes a while to get back to Premier League level.

"The difference between good and excellent is only small.

"Looking back at the first eight months...must've been a few moments where we had one week rest.

I would have loved to have played Champions League quarters and now this is our situation and we accept it.

"It's also a challenge.

Players stay fit to play two or three times a week now it is training sessions and they have to work a bit harder there, which is a challenge against them."
