Everton manager David Moyes has reacted hilariously to the news about Virgil van Dijk’s new contract at Liverpool.
After months of speculation, Van Dijk put pen to paper on a new deal at Anfield on Thursday, which will extend his seven-year stay at the club for another two years.
At 33, he becomes the oldest outfield player in Premier League history to sign a multi-year extension without a salary reduction.
The absence of performance-related pay cuts or release clauses underscores Liverpool’s faith in his physical durability and leadership value.
There was plenty of discourse around whether the club and FSG would offer new terms to someone who will be 34 by the start of next season.
Van Dijk’s new deal is a significant boost for Liverpool, who have made it a priority to keep key players as they transition into a new era under manager Arne Slot.
Since joining from Southampton in 2018, Van Dijk has become a cornerstone of Liverpool’s defence, helping the club to major successes, including the Premier League and Champions League titles.
This contract extension follows closely on the heels of Mohamed Salah’s renewal.
Everton manager David Moyes was quizzed about the Liverpool captain’s new contract during a press conference on Thursday, and he offered a funny response, before showering the Dutchman with praise.
“Looks like a bad signing for me,” Moyes said when asked about what he thought about the Van Dijk contract news.
“Can’t see how that player’s going to work.”
“He’s been a terrific player for Celtic, and certainly a terrific player for Liverpool,” he added.
Meanwhile, Van Dijk, while speaking to Liverpoolfc.com in the immediate wake of his contract announcement, was quizzed on how much influence Arne Slot had on him remaining at Anfield for the foreseeable future.
He poured praise on the Dutchman but made sure to praise Jurgen Klopp for the decision he made to make him captain in the German’s final campaign as Liverpool boss:
“We shouldn’t skip too quickly over what Jürgen Klopp obviously did over the years for me and my family, because obviously he gave me the opportunity to be the captain of Liverpool,” Van Dijk said.
