David Moyes was left hugely frustrated by Liverpool’s winning goal against Everton in the Merseyside derby, insisting it was a “clear offside” in the build-up.

Diogo Jota’s goal just before the hour mark earned the Reds a 1-0 win at Anfield and took them back to 12 points clear of Arsenal at the top of the Premier League table.

Everton argued it should have been ruled out as Luis Diaz had been standing in an offside position when James Tarkowski slid in front of him to clear.

The ball swiftly bounced back into Diaz’s path, he flicked it through to Jota and the Liverpool forward finished well in the box to break the deadlock.

Moyes spoke to the officials about the decision after the match, as he questioned how the goal had been allowed to stand.

“The player behind Tarkowski interferes with him clearing it,” Moyes said.

“It’s a clear offside, I think it’s a very easy decision to give.

I can’t understand any reason why that wouldn’t have been given offside.

None at all.”

He added: “It’s just a bit gut-wrenching when you feel as if the end result has come from something that we didn’t think was deserved.”

Everton held Liverpool to a draw at Goodison Park in February and it was another tight encounter here, with Moyes proud of his side’s efforts even as their nine-match unbeaten run in the Premier League came to an end.

“Over the two games, we’ve given them a really good game,” Moyes said.

Liverpool’s goal was not the only decision for VAR to make in the match, with Tarkowski extremely lucky to be on the pitch after a challenge on Alexis Mac Allister early in the match.

The Everton man got the ball but then caught Mac Allister with force and extremely high, but VAR opted to stay with the on-field decision of a yellow card.

“My first thought was it’s a brilliant tackle for a derby game,” Moyes said.

“A tackle that maybe we would have seen a few years ago.

But I understand that nowadays there’s things that are slightly different with follow throughs, so we might have got a bit lucky.

“But don’t be sort of putting that with the goal.

The goal was a different incident which actually won Liverpool the game in the end.”
