David Moyes has conceded that James Tarkowski’s challenge on Alexis Mac Allister may have been too reckless after adopting a different stance in the immediate aftermath of the clash.
The defender’s controversial challenge on the No.10 has sparked widespread debate, prompting a rare admission of error from refereeing authorities.
The Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) later acknowledged the tackle constituted “serious foul play” and warranted a red card
A full Sky Sport statement on the matter read:
“PGMOL acknowledge that Everton defender James Tarkowski should have been issued with a red card in their fixture with Liverpool.”
“The challenge saw Tarkowski clearly play the ball initially, however, the nature of the follow-through met the threshold for serious foul play.”
Initially, Everton boss David Moyes defended the challenge, calling it “a brilliant tackle for a derby game” and attributing the controversy to modern interpretations of follow-through.
However, with some time now passed between the derby and now, Moyes has now conceded that Tarkowski’s challenge was reckless.
Speaking in his pre-Arsenal press conference, he said:
“We have to hold our hand up, looking at it again, I believe it could have been a sending off,” Moyes admitted.
“It’s part of football and he made, which looked at the time I thought, a really good tackle?
Anybody really who has followed football over the period of their lifetime will have seen that as offside.”
“So, it’s an easy thing for them to come out now and say there’s a rule.
Nearly all the clips you see, shows that he’s offside, so I find it really incredible.
“It’s interesting that we’re just about to go the new semi-automated system, and what they would do with the decision.
If the pass wasn’t aimed or going to him, I could maybe understand.”
“We see it all the time, people blocking from behind and free-kicks getting given, people are not talking about a visionary line?
