David Ornstein has provided his latest Arsenal transfer news that has some potential Liverpool relevance and repercussions.
Arsenal’s 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace on Wednesday all but cemented their third straight Premier League challenge that has ended up in disappointment for the London outfit.
With Liverpool requiring only a point against Tottenham on Sunday to clinch their 20th title, the Gunners now face some hard questions about their progress in the last years.
While their Champions League semi-final run—secured via a historic 5-1 aggregate demolition of Real Madrid—offers solace, domestic stagnation has intensified scrutiny.
But it seems that they could look to find their solution in the transfer market, and according to David Ornstein – they feel they have already secured the signing of Martin Zubimendi, who was chased by Liverpool extensively last summer.
When discussing Arsenal’s midfield plans for next season, David Ornstein revealed that the Gunners – at least internally – are acting as if Martin Zubimendi is already a done deal:
“Jorginho is expected to leave when his terms expire at the end of this season,” Ornstein said to NBC Sports.
“They’ll be adding to the midfield with the arrival of Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad.”
“Arsenal acting, internally, as if that is a done deal.”
It has been reported since the turn of the year that negotiations are at an “advanced stage” to trigger his €60m release clause.
However, last summer’s aborted Liverpool move looms large—the Spaniard had initially agreed to join the Reds but his love for his boyhood club meant that he did a trander U-turn.
Real Madrid’s lingering interest and Zubimendi’s 2024 U-turn make it that Arsenal may be naive to feel that the deal is ‘done’ before the Spaniard himself puts pen to paper.
Arteta’s personal involvement and sporting director Andrea Berta’s La Liga connections have bolstered confidence, with reports emphasizing Zubimendi’s desire to work under his compatriot.
But if the Gunners have anything to learn from Liverpool’s attempts, they should not be counting their chickens before they hatch.
