It seems that Liverpool’s hope of signing Martin Zubimendi have all but faded after the summer saga.
The 25-year-old midfielder had previously turned down Liverpool’s offer to activate his €60 million release clause in the summer of 2024, citing loyalty to Sociedad and a desire to remain in La Liga.
However, it now looks like Zubimendi has had a change of heart, driven by Sociedad’s struggles this season and his ambition to compete at the highest level.
After prior reports from the Daily Mail that Arsenal would sign Martin Zubimendi in the summer, David Ornstein has confirmed the hammer blow.
David Ornstein confirms Arsenal and Martin Zubimendi news
Writing for the Athletic, the transfer journalist confirmed that Arsenal interest in Martin Zubimendi is concrete:
“Arsenal are pursuing a deal to sign midfielder Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad next summer.”
“The move for the 25-year-old has been worked on for a considerable time and if an agreement is reached will come a year after Liverpool failed in their own bid to sign the Spain international.”
“Mikel Arteta is the key driver behind a pursuit that was reinvigorated in the process of negotiating with their La Liga counterparts for the signing of Mikel Merino in August.”
