David Ornstein has provided a brief update on Liverpool interest in Atheltic Bilbao’s Nico Williams.
For most Reds fans, the last thing they want to hear about is transfers that never seem to materialize.
Liverpool’s January transfer window was marked by a lack of new signings, but the club was active in managing their squad through loan deals and permanent exits.
Liverpool saw two players leave the club on permanent deals during the January window.
Notably, Marcelo Pitaluga returned to Brazil to join Fluminense after nearly five years at Anfield.
The move was a free transfer, but Liverpool secured a 40% sell-on clause.
Another departure was Tom Hill, who moved to Harrogate Town in League Two.
Several Liverpool players were sent out on loan to gain more playing experience.
Jayden Danns signed a long-term deal with Liverpool before being loaned to Sunderland.
But despite the window slamming shut, it seems Liverpool are still laying the groundwork for the summer.
What did David Ornstein say about Liverpool and Nico Williams?
It is no secret that Liverpool holds historical interest in the Athletic Bilbao player, having been linked with a move for the 22-year-old in the summer.
The 22-year-old was on everybody’s lips over the summer owing to his excellent performances for Spain in their victorious Euro 2024 campaign while also having a solid season for Athletic Bilbao.
Williams’ contract with Athletic Club includes a release clause reportedly set at €55 million, a figure deemed feasible in the current transfer market.
FC Barcelona had previously shown interest in Williams.
Now David Ornstein has provided another positive update, writing in the Athletic Transfer Dealsheet:
“Nico Williams wanted to join Barcelona last summer, waiting for them despite interest from the Premier League,” the transfer journalist began.
“Barcelona are unlikely to be there for him in the summer window, given Raphinha and Lamine Yamal’s form.”
“He is now more open to a move to the Premier League, as reported in the Transfer Radar.”
“Williams has a release clause of around €60million (£50m, $62m)
The likes of Arsenal, Bayern Munich, Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham hold a long-standing admiration.”
Athletic Bilbao’s unique recruitment philosophy sets them apart in modern football, adhering strictly to their tradition of only signing players with Basque heritage or those developed through their prestigious academy system.
Nico Williams exemplifies this special relationship, having risen through Athletic’s renowned academy alongside his brother Iñaki
Given this deep-rooted connection and the club’s cultural significance, any attempt to lure the talented winger away from La Liga would face significant challenges.
