David Ornstein has provided a brief update on Darwin Nunez amid Saudi interest materializing this January.
Nunez’s inconsistent form for Liverpool has persisted this season, despite occasional flashes of brilliance.
The Uruguayan striker, who joined the Reds for a club-record fee in 2022, has struggled to live up to expectations for a third season running.
In the 2024/2025 Premier League campaign so far, Nunez has scored just 4 goals in 17 appearances, with only 7 starts?
His goal involvement stands at 6, with 2 assists to his name.
Despite a recent highlight with his brace against Brentford and Arne Slot’s public defense of the player, it’s widely believed that Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes will approach matters at Anfield with a pragmatic, unsentimental perspective.
Nunez’s overall record of 37 goals in 122 appearances for Liverpool has failed to meet the high expectations set by his impressive performances at Benfica, which initially prompted the Reds to make such a significant investment in him.
And it seems that Liverpool will have a big decision to make in the summer according to reports.
What did David Ornstein report on Darwin Nunez?
The Athletic reporter has been documenting Al Nassr interest in Aston Villa’s Jhon Duran and Bayer Leverkusen’s Victor Boniface.
In the report, he mentioned that Nunez was also an option for the Riyadh club.
This is in addition to Al-Hilal, who reportedly made an offer in January for the Uruguayan but was rejected by the club.
The Saudi champions were willing to fork out wages of £29 million per year to lure the 25-year-old out of Anfield.
And in the summer, this trend could continue with Ornstein writing:
“Liverpool’s Darwin Nunez was another target for Al Nassr but the Merseyside club have no intention of selling him at this stage in the window.”
“There is expected to be a significant market for Nunez in the summer, if Liverpool choose to sell the 25-year-old.”
“But he is viewed as an important part of Arne Slot’s squad as they compete for major honours in the second half of this season,” the transfer journalist explained.
It’s clear that this summer will be a very important one in determining whether Nunez has a future at Liverpool.
Bought in for a potential £85 million, Liverpool must decide whether to cut their losses or try and finally make it work for their No.9 at Anfield.
