Liverpool-linked Dean Huijsen has made a huge claim about former Reds’ star Joel Matip.
Matip left Liverpool at the end of last season, bringing an end to his eight-year stay at the club at the expiration of his contract.
The 6ft 5? Cameroon international joined the club on a free transfer from Schalke 04 in the summer of 2016 and had a huge impact at the club during his time there.
As a central defender, Matip has provided stability, technical skill, and an excellent understanding of the game to Liverpool’s backline.
Matip quickly became an integral part of the Liverpool defense, known for his calm presence, intelligence on the ball, and defensive prowess.
His partnership with Virgil van Dijk, established during the 2018-2019 season, has been particularly influential.
Young Bournemouth defender Dean Huijsen, who only recently broke into the limelight, has spoken about Matip, naming him as one of the Premier League’s most underrated defenders
Speaking on the Papa Pincus YouTube channel, the 19-year-old noted that while he doesn’t necessarily remember everyone, he believes that Matip is among the most underrated centre-halves in the league’s history.
“Who do you think is the most underrated Premier League centre-back of all time?” Huijsen was asked.
“It’s a good question.
Obviously, I’m young, so I haven’t seen much of the past, but from what I have seen, maybe Joel Matip,” Huijsen said.
“He did it for so long, he was playing with Van Dijk,” he added.
Huijsen will be hoping to enjoy and even surpass the successful career Matip enjoyed across spells with Schalke 04 and Liverpool.
The 19-year-old center-back has all the tools to go to the top and could go on to represent Liverpool if things go as planned.
Huijsen only joined Bournemouth last summer and has a £50 million release clause that has attracted attention from across the continent.
Liverpool are one of the clubs seriously considering signing him this summer?
The Reds’ interest in the Spanish international was recently confirmed by transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, who revealed that Arne Slot’s side have “already made some contacts to understand how his release clause works”.
