'Desperate': English media are all saying the same thing about Curtis Jones' performance vs Albania

Thomas Tuchel’s reign as England manager got off to a winning start, with Liverpool’s Curtis Jones named in the start XI.

Paired with Declan Rice at the base of a 4-2-3-1 formation, the 24-year-old midfielder played 74 minutes for the Three Lions before being brought off for Morgan Rogers, with Jones the only Liverpool player to make the matchday squad for England.

Jones is one of 20 Liverpool players to be called up for international duty this March with the Reds academy graduate giving a decent account for himself at Wembley Stadium against Albania, with Tuchel seemingly continuing the search for Rice’s midfield partner.

And the English media have since given their reaction to Jones’ performance against Albania, with a common remark coming up after last night’s win.

Jones has been a regular for Liverpool this season with the 24-year-old really taking to Arne Slot’s tactics since the Dutchman’s arrival, with the midfielder once again improving after consistent years of development.

Yet as noted by the likes of BBC Sport, Jones ‘showed flashes’ of quality for England against Albania yet looked like he was trying too much to win the audition of becoming Rice’s long-term midfielder partner for the Three Lions.

Yahoo Sports echoed this criticism by saying Jones looked ‘desperate’ to make himself the go-to-man for Rice in the midfield, with the Liverpool man’s passing noted as being ‘lax’ in some moments during the game.

Despite some nitpicking criticism, the Telegraph were very complimentary of Jones’ performance, with the Liverpool man noted for his ‘good engine’ and his ability to drive through the Albania midfield and defence with ease.

With 20 players out playing for their respective counties, this international break will see few names from Liverpool actually get any sort of rest, especially with FIFA World Cup qualifiers and UEFA Nations League ties taking place.

And performances have been mixed, with Ibrahima Konate slammed by the French media for his performance against Croatia as the defender conceded a penalty and was brought off at half-time with a knock.

With Andy Robertson impressive for Scotland, though, the international break hasn’t been a total disaster for Liverpool, and the Reds will hope that their key players can all return to Merseyside next week fully fit and firing.
