Sam Allardyce has claimed that Liverpool will avoid a 'devastating blow' if Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk both sign new contracts with the club.

Both players have entered the final months of their existing deals, as has Trent Alexander-Arnold.

However, it emerged on Wednesday evening that Liverpool are increasingly confident they can reach an agreement with Salah for the forward to stay at Anfield beyond the end of the season.

As reported by the ECHO, there is an expectation from Liverpool that a deal will be struck with the forwar.

While speaking following his side’s 3-2 defeat to Fulham on Sunday, Van Dijk revealed that there has been "progress" in negotiations with Liverpool over a new contract.

The development was made even bigger by the fact that the Dutchman said last month that he had "no idea" if he would remain at Anfield.

"There is progress, yeah," said the Netherlands captain following the game at Craven Cottage.

I love the club, I love the fans and they were there for us again and we wanted to reward them.

"But I want them to be there on Sunday again [at home to West Ham United] and make the stadium an amazing venue like always for us."

And reacting to the developments on Sky Sports News, Allardyce said: "They left it late, didn't they!

"Took their time, you wouldn't normally allow players of their quality to almost run their contract out.

That is very, very dangerous from the club's point of view.

"Particularly what the club's achieved with the new manager this season it would have been a devastating blow for Liverpool having lost them."

Before he concluded: "If they only lose Trent that's not so bad but I don't think they should lose him either - they should have done their best to sign him on.
