Mohamed Salah has been Liverpool’s best player this season, yet most supporters would agree that the winger hasn’t been at the top of his game in recent weeks.
The Egyptian international was poor against PSG across both legs in Liverpool’s UEFA Champions League series with the French giants as Salah was called out by Gary Neville after Sunday’s Carabao Cup final loss against Newcastle United for failing to turn up.
With Salah now one of 20 Liverpool players away on national team duty, the 32-year-old forward could be offered the time and relaxation needed to recover ahead of the final sprint of the Premier League season, where the title could be wrapped up next month.
Yet former Liverpool star Steve Nicol believes Salah’s drop in form has nothing to do with the former AS Roma star individually.

Speaking on ESPN FC, the pundit noted that Salah’s Liverpool teammates are letting the winger down by not getting the ball to him as much as they have this season, with the 32-year-old’s form suffering as a result.
With Micah Richards saying Salah missed Trent Alexander-Arnold against Newcastle on Sunday, there could be some truth to the Liverpool superstar lacking the service needed in recent games to fully exploit opposing teams.
And for Nicol, this factor is the main reason behind Salah’s failure to do much in Liverpool’s recent big games against PSG and Newcastle, with the Egyptian simply lacking the effort from his teammates to go at defences.
MORE LIVERPOOL STORIES
Nicol said: “The major point is that in the great season Liverpool have had so far, they’ve got him on the ball consistently, time and time again he’s been getting one-on-one with his defender and being in a position where he can get in the box and get off these shots, all of these things which have disappeared from the Liverpool team in the last two or three weeks, that’s the biggest problem.”
Football is a funny game where everything can change within a matter of days, and Salah’s story is no exception, with the winger backed by Theo Walcott to win the Ballon d’Or just two weeks ago to now being just another candidate for the award.
Indeed, Liverpool’s end-of-season plans seem underwhelming considering what was on offer with the quadruple, yet despite only having the Premier League to focus on, Salah will still want to end the year on a massive high.
There’s a real chance that Salah could end up breaking multiple Premier League records on Liverpool’s way to lifting a title, and the winger will want to prove to the world that he’s still the best in the world.
