As Liverpool bask in their impending Premier League triumph, a growing concern emerges over Ibrahima Konate’s future, with the French defender yet to sign a new contract despite entering the final year of his current deal.
Initially viewed as a straightforward renewal, negotiations have stalled, leaving fans and analysts questioning whether the 25-year-old will follow Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk in committing long-term to Arne Slot’s project.
In October 2024, Fabrizio Romano reported that Konate was “fully expected” to sign a new deal, citing advanced talks and mutual interest.
Six months later, however, no agreement has been reached.
The delay has sparked theories, including one suggesting Konate waited to see if Salah and Van Dijk – both recently renewed until 2027 – would stay.
With those deals finalized, the ball now sits firmly in Konate’s court if that line of thought is to be believed.
Central to the impasse are Konate’s reported salary demands.
Currently earning £80,000 per week (£4.16 million annually), the defender seeks a raise to £200,000 weekly (£10.4 million annually) – a figure that would place him among Liverpool’s top earners.
And according to the latest reports, Reds fans should not be holding their breath for an agreement any time soon.
Lewis Steele, writing in the Daily Mail’s Liverpool Confidential, has reported that ‘zero’ progress has been made on Ibrahima Konate and a new contract at Anfield.
He further underlines that Konate’s future is now uncertain alongside the likes of Joe Gomez and Jarell Quansah:
“Aside from captain Virgil van Dijk, all of Liverpool’s central defenders have slightly uncertain futures,” the Merseyside reporter wrote.
“Ibrahima Konate is out of contract next summer with zero progress made in recent months in terms of an extension, while Joe Gomez and Jarell Quansah also have external suitors.”
