Dominik Szoboszlai put in a man of the match performance to help Liverpool to a comfortable victory over Newcastle United.

A stalwart in Arne Slot's plans, the midfielder has now grabbed a goal in consecutive matches for the first time with the Reds.

A goal, assist and a distance run of 11.5km against Manchester City last Sunday meant Szoboszlai had produced one of his most complete performances in a Liverpool shirt to date.

His low 11th-minute strike set the tone for a fine Anfield victory.

"If I can score more goals back-to-back I will be happy but until we are in first position in the league I am more happy," was his simple message to TNT Sports after the final whistle.

Arsenal's dropped points vs Nottingham Forest means the league leaders are 13 points ahead with 10 matches left to play.

And as influential on the pitch as Szoboszlai is, off-field he cuts a kind figure - even when it comes to rivals, and straight after playing a match too.

Elsewhere reigning champions Manchester City - out of the title picture for months now having succumbed to tired legs and injuries - secured a 1-0 win at Tottenham Hotspur.

Their goal came from Erling Haaland, who had been ruled out for the Reds' meeting with City four days ago with injury.

"Important win," said the striker on Instagram after making his swift return, to which Szoboszlai commented a love heart emoji to show appreciation.

It must be remembered that before they became Premier League foes, the Reds' No.8 and the Norwegian striker goalscorer had been RB Salzburg teammates of yesteryear.

In Austria they played only 19 matches together before being split up by transfers.

Yet it produced a long-lasting friendship that continued in the Bundesliga when Szoboszlai was with RB Leipzig and Haaland was with Borussia Dortmund, and now in the English top-flight.
