The EFL have reportedly made a major decision on how VAR will be utilsed in the upcoming Carabao Cup final between Liverpool and Newcastle United.

The Reds secured their place in the final with a commanding 4-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur in the second leg of the semi-final, overturning a 1-0 first-leg deficit.

Arne Slot’s side beat West Ham, Brighton, Southampton and Tottenham on their way to Wembley.

This is Liverpool’s 15th Carabao Cup final record in the Premier League, which is also their third in the last four seasons.

They face Newcastle United, who booked their place in Wembley courtesy of a convincing 4-0 aggregate win over Arsenal in the semi-finals.

Liverpool recently announced ticket prices and allocation for the game, which has been confirmed to kick off at 4:30pm GMT on March 16.

Ahead of the match, it is being reported that the EFL is set to continue the trial of a new VAR rule they trailed in the semi-final.

EFL to continue new VAR trial in Carabao Cup final

According to a report by The Mirror, the EFL will continue the trial of in-stadium VAR announcements by referees at next month’s Carabao Cup final between Liverpool and Newcastle.

It means any decisions made by VAR at Wembley will be announced by the on-field referee to the fans inside the stadium.

Per the report, the EFL has told Liverpool and Newcastle that the experiment will continue at Wembley after it was trialled for the first time in the Carabao Cup semi-finals.

In Liverpool’s first-leg defeat at Tottenham referee Stuart Atwell announced his decision in the stadium, after Dominic Solanke had a goal ruled out for offside.

However, the referee did not when Lucas Bergvall escaped a second booking before scoring the match-winner.

The decision to adopt the rule, which was trialled at the Club World Cup and the Under-20 World Cup before being used at the 2023 Women’s World Cup, has already drawn scrutiny from Liverpool coach Arne Slot.

Reacting to the new development, Slot insisted that it could lead to referees receiving more abuse if fans are unhappy with the decision.

“I wonder if we are all going to like this,” Slot said after the first leg at Spurs.

I wonder if it’s a good thing for the referee because he is already under a lot of pressure in every game.

“I think him explaining would even add more pressure in the next, and the next and the next decision he has to make.

I think maybe if he (referee Stuart Attwell) had explained it (not punishing Bergvall) and it disadvantaged the home team, then maybe it would have become even more pressure.

“For me it is not necessary to announce things?

But I can see the live coverage of everything (on a screen), it is not available or every fan so it’s something nice for them.”

While the new rule is yet to gain traction in the Premier League, there are currently plans to use it at this summer’s Club World Cup.
