Fenway Sports Group (FSG), the American owners of Liverpool FC, are exploring opportunities to expand their football portfolio.
Their strategy involves acquiring clubs with strong traditions and potential for growth, aiming to implement their expertise in football operations to elevate such teams.
This approach aligns with FSG’s previous interest in clubs like Bordeaux, where talks eventually ceased after extensive discussions.
EXCLUSIVE: FSG make move to buy La Liga side
A delegation from FSG visited the facilities of Málaga CF in February to assess the feasibility of a potential acquisition.
Málaga, currently competing in Spain’s second division, has faced financial challenges and is under judicial administration.
The club’s ownership is split between Sheikh Abdullah Al Thani, holding 51%, and Spanish hotel and real estate group BlueBay, owning 49%.
FSG’s immediate focus is reportedly on Al Thani’s stake, viewing this as an opportunity to restore Málaga to prominence in Spanish and European football.
An FSG spokesperson commented on the group’s exploratory activities, stating that they “routinely engage in conversations and evaluate opportunities across global sports,” emphasizing that this is a standard process to assess ventures aligning with their strategic priorities.
Málaga CF boasts a rich history, having reached the Champions League quarter-finals in 2013.
However, the club was relegated from La Liga in 2018 and has since struggled to regain its top-flight status.
FSG believes that, with strategic investment and management, Málaga can return to the upper echelons of Spanish football.
This potential acquisition reflects FSG’s commitment to a multi-club ownership model, aiming to create synergies between their football investments.
For Liverpool FC, this strategy could offer benefits such as player development pathways and broader scouting networks.
FSG has assured that their pursuit of additional clubs will not detract from their focus and investment in Liverpool, but rather serve to strengthen the club’s future prospects.
