Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe has reiterated he won't take any risks with Alexander Isak after the striker missed the 2-0 defeat to Liverpool earlier this week.

Arne Slot's side extended their lead at the top of the Premier League table with goals from Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister, with Arsenal drawing at Nottingham Forest at the same time.

Isak travelled to Anfield but was left out of the matchday squad with a minor groin injury.

Prior to kick-off, the Newcastle boss said Isak's injury was not thought to be a long-term one.

However, speaking at his pre-match press conference to preview Sunday's FA Cup tie against Brighton & Hove Albion on Friday morning, Howe admitted he hadn't seen the Swedish international since Wednesday night.

"We'll see today; I haven't seen him since the game, so we'll see how he is today and have a discussion with him, I'm sure," he said via Chronicle Live.

"We don't think it's a long-term problem.

"If he's fit, he will play."

When pressed if there was a risk to playing Isak this weekend, Howe added: "There's always a risk with any player - even if they're 100% fit, that's the world that we're in, but we wouldn't take any risks on his long-term fitness.

But we'll see how he is today."

Fellow striker Callum Wilson was forced off with an injury at Anfield after a clash of heads with Liverpool's Virgil Van Dijk but should be fit for their FA Cup clash.

"I believe Callum is OK, he took a cut to his eye," Howe revealed.

I thought Callum did well in the game so fingers crossed he's fine as well."

Liverpool take on Newcastle in the Carabao Cup Final on March 16th and will be hoping to avoid any further injury scares with Joelinton and Sven Botman also doubts for that game.

"Sven and Joe have a chance [of being involved against Brighton], today is a big day for them," said Howe.
