Eddie Howe has given an update on the severity of Alexander Isak’s injury after the Newcastle United striker was a surprise omission from the starting line-up against Liverpool on Wednesday night.
“[I’m] really disappointed that we lose Alex but he’s a player that we can’t take any risks with,” Howe told TNT Sports ahead of the game.
Wednesday’s Premier League encounter is a dress rehearsal for the match at Wembley in mid-March when Arne Slot will be aiming to win his first trophy as Liverpool boss.
Slot was handed a two-match suspension on Wednesday following his red card against Everton two weeks ago and, like Isak, was forced to watch on from an unwanted vantage point.
“It is an understatement to say Isak is in fine form,” Slot said when asked about the Newcastle forward ahead of the game.

Meanwhile, Howe also dropped Lewis Miley for the Liverpool game, with the midfielder starting his first match of the season on Sunday after recovering from a long-term foot injury.
