Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has admitted that an appeal is possible following Anthony Gordon's red card.

The 24-year-old is set to miss their Carabao Cup final against Liverpool after being sent off on Sunday.

The former Everton winger was involved in an off-the-ball incident with Brighton & Hove Albion defender Jan Paul van Hecke during their FA Cup fifth-round tie.

He is now set to miss the Magpies' next three matches should they fail to lodge an appeal or lose their plea.

With the League Cup final to be played on March 16, it will be the second of three that Gordon may be forced to miss through suspension as they face West Ham and Brentford either side of the showpiece at Wembley.

However, Howe's initial feeling was that the dismissal was harsh and he didn't rule out the possibility of appealing the decision.

"Well it looks harsh, we'll have to analyse it properly," said the Newcastle boss.

"I've not seen a replay on it, I'm just going on my original view, I thought it looked harsh but we'll see then see what we do.

Anthony obviously didn't mean any harm.

I've only seen him very briefly but he's disappointed."

After Gordon's red card, Brighton were also reduced to 10 men when Tariq Lamptey was sent off for a second bookable offence.
