Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has addressed concerns that rumoured Liverpool target Alexander Isak is 'injury-prone'.

The Reds have been heavily linked with the Sweden international in recent times amid uncertainty over the futures of their own forward-line.

The 25-year-old has established himself as one of the most devastating strikers in the Premier League since his move from Real Sociedad in 2022, while he has scored 24 goals across 34 appearances in all competitions this term.

Any chase for Isak this summer would be complex, given the huge price-tag placed on him by his current club.

The huge fee, as well as a questionable injury record, has resulted in some apprehension over whether he would be the most worthwhile investment for Liverpool this summer, if they are in fact ready to test Newcastle's resolve.

In his first season at St James' park, he missed 18 games in total for both club and country with a thigh problem.

The following campaign he missed 12, while he has been side-lined for nine games in total this term.

However, the notion of Isak being an injury-prone player is not something his manager agrees with.

While he has been nursing a minor groin problem in recent weeks, Howe insists the striker is extremely professional in the way he looks after himself and the notion is exaggerated.

"Speaking on my behalf - as a very injury-prone player - if you look at my record then that's injury-prone!" said the Newcastle boss to the media on Friday, ahead of their Premier League meeting with Leicester City.

"Alex certainly isn't.

It came to the fore just before we played Liverpool [in February] but, with rest, he was fine and good to go and played really well in the cup final last month."

Howe went on to detail how the north east club manage Isak's fitness and the importance of player's building a trusting relationship with their physios.
