Eddie Howe has lauded Liverpool as ‘the best team in the Premier League’ as he explained the lengths Newcastle United went to to get the better of the Reds in the League Cup final.

Goals either side of half-time from Dan Burn and Alexander Isak earned the Magpies a 2-1 victory at Wembley.

Burn’s opener in particular came at a crucial time after an impressive first half performance, scoring on the stroke of half-time as the centre-back peeled off Alexis Mac Allister to head home from a corner at the far post.

And Howe revealed Newcastle have been working specifically on their set-pieces over the past two weeks with one eye on the final as he praised his side for a deserved win.

“We respect Liverpool but I don’t think you can go on the pitch and fear anyone,” he said.

I don’t think anyone can begrudge us the win.

“I am a firm believer that you are in control of everything.

I have to compliment Liverpool.

“Liverpool have been the best team in the Premier League by a mile this year, consistently, so we had to raise our game to have any chance to beat them.

We did certain things like the set plays, no team shape as such but the set plays we started a while back.

“We all sat down two weeks away from the final and said a set play can win us the game, let’s see what we can do.

We played against a brilliant opponent, the best team in the Premier League all season by a long way but we were the better team.”

And asked about his muted reaction at the final whistle, speaking to Sky Sports, he added: "You have to show respect to the opposition.
