'Enjoyed it': Wayne Rooney aims dig at Liverpool after watching them lose twice in one week

The fallout is continuing after Liverpool put in a toothless performance to lose the Carabao Cup final against Newcastle.

The Reds could have made it back-to-back wins of the trophy and a third title since 2022, but came up short against the Magpies.

In truth, Liverpool got what they deserved at Wembley.

There was simply not enough energy and fight against a Newcastle side who were full of it.

After losing and being knocked out of the Champions League against PSG in midweek, it has been a tough week for Arne Slot and the Liverpool squad.

However, with Newcastle having gone 70 years without a trophy, there appeared to be little sympathy for the Reds from just about anyone on Sunday evening.

One man who seemed happier than most was Man United and Everton legend Wayne Rooney who could not hide his delight while covering the game for BBC Match of the Day.

Rooney is never going to be the man to turn to for an honest and unbiased assessment of Liverpool.

The 39-year-old failed manager hates the Reds and has not been shy of proclaiming it ever since he burst onto the scene more than 20 years ago.

MORE LIVERPOOL STORIES

Having been to his first Anfield European night in midweek, Rooney slated the atmosphere against PSG, claiming that he had expected better after hearing tales down the years.

And, turning up on Match of the Day on Sunday night, the Scouser clearly took great delight in seeing Liverpool beaten again.

“I certainly enjoyed it!” laughed Rooney, with a smirk on his face.

“I was at the PSG game midweek and then obviously seeing the Newcastle game today.

“But Newcastle deserved it, I thought they were excellent they showed a lot of desire, fight, courage to take the ball, they could’ve won by a lot more.

Liverpool just didn’t seem themselves.”

Being the big club Liverpool are, there will have been plenty of people delighting in their downfall on Sunday.

While that can be difficult to take at times, the facts are that the Reds simply did nothing to deserve the trophy.

If you want the plaudits you have to turn up on the biggest occasions.

First with PSG and then with Newcastle, Liverpool gave people like Rooney the chance to laugh at their demise.

As they jet off on international break this week, the Liverpool players should be soaking all of this in and ensuring they come back stronger.

There is still a league title to be won.
