Liverpool are heading into what could be their most pivotal transfer window in recent years, with squad refreshment needed across several positions and the looming departure of vice-captain Trent Alexander-Arnold to Real Madrid creating an urgent need for reinforcements.

With multiple contracts running down and several positions requiring attention, sporting director Richard Hughes faces a challenging summer.

Most pressing is the near-certain departure of Trent Alexander-Arnold, with Sky Sports reporting that the England international is keen to join Real Madrid when his contract expires on June 30.

Despite Liverpool offering an improved contract, Alexander-Arnold appears set to end his 21-year association with his boyhood club, having made nearly 350 appearances and won every major trophy available.

Beyond Alexander-Arnold, there are contract concerns surrounding captain Virgil van Dijk and star forward Mohamed Salah, both of whom could potentially leave as free agents.

With Alexander-Arnold’s anticipated departure to Real Madrid, reports from Italy are hoping that Liverpool do their shopping for a replacement in Serie A.

According to Wednesday’s print edition of Gazzetta dello Sport, Juventus are “praying” that Liverpool enter the race for  Andrea Cambiaso, hoping to trigger a bidding war with long-term suitors Manchester City.

The Turin club is desperate for a significant cash injection following the recent sacking of coach Thiago Motta, with compensation costs further straining their already precarious financial situation.

Manchester City’s pursuit of Cambiaso is well-documented, with Pep Guardiola having personally endorsed the signing during the January transfer window.

According to multiple reports, the Premier League champions had reached an agreement with Juventus on a €60 million (£49.9 million) deal before the transfer deadline.

City had even secured personal terms with Cambiaso on a contract running until June 2029, but ultimately prioritized other signings, including Nico Gonzalez from Porto.

Despite this January setback, City are expected to revive their interest in Cambiaso this summer.

“Juventus will explain what happened,” the agent of the player, Giovanni Bia, said of Manchester City’s interest in February.

“I’ll tell you that what came out in the newspapers in relation to the negotiations is all true.

The player’s versatility—he can operate effectively as a left-back, right-back, or wing-back on either side—makes him an attractive option for both Premier League giants.
