Everton and Liverpool will both be out for more than just bragging rights in the final Merseyside derby at Goodison Park tonight.

The first meeting of the season between the two sides has been long in the making after their original December fixture was postponed.

Since then, the Toffees have replaced Sean Dyche with David Moyes and reaped the rewards with three wins from his first five games.

David Moyes knows this fixture better than anyone, while this is Arne Slot's first experience of it.

This is the 120th meeting between the two at this famous old ground.

This is a very interesting choice of programme cover from Everton, as they've gone for Mikel Arteta celebrating a goal against Liverpool.

Arsenal are currently six points behind Liverpool at the top of the table, but this is the Reds' game in hand.

Should they win here, they will move nine points clear at the top of the table having played the same number of matches.

But any points dropped would open the door for Arteta and co.

So, are the Toffees hinting they will do their old player a favour?

Everton won 2-0 in their last Premier League game against Liverpool in April 2024, last winning consecutive league Merseyside derbies in the 1984-85 campaign.Liverpool’s 2-0 loss in this exact fixture last season ended a 12-game unbeaten away run in the Premier League against Everton (W3 D9).

They’ve not lost consecutive visits to Goodison Park since a run of three between 1992 and 1994.Everton vs Liverpool is the fixture to have seen the most red cards (23) and been drawn 0-0 the most (12) in Premier League history.

Also, Liverpool have scored more 90th-minute winners against Everton in the competition than any other side against a single opponent (5).Liverpool have won 99 games against Everton in all competitions (D77 L68) – if they win this match, it will be the fifth time an English league side has beaten another 100 times since the formation of the Football League in 1888 (Arsenal 111 vs Everton, Manchester United 106 vs Aston Villa, Liverpool 103 vs Aston Villa, Arsenal 100 vs Manchester City).Liverpool are unbeaten in their last 19 Premier League games (W14 D5).

Well, this is rather unusual, but with Trent Alexander-Arnold and Curtis Jones on the bench, the Reds are set to make some Premier League history.

This starting XI that Arne Slot is the first since the Premier League started they've named which hasn't had an English player in it.

Now, I have no idea how many games that is, but given the top-flight started in 1992 and used to have more teams, we are talking an absurdly high number.

Of course, there are other Premier League teams who've done the same, but none of them have had the longevity of Liverpool.

It is quite a stunning statistic.

So after 130 years at Goodison Park, this is the final Merseyside derby to be held here.

It is a sad moment as we say goodbye to playing an iconic fixture at a fabulous ground.

Goodison has provided some special memories in Merseyside derbies over the years for both Liverpool and Everton.

Incredibly, after 119 derbies, Liverpool and Everton are locked at 41 wins each, so the ultimate bragging rights are up for grabs here.

The emotion can already be felt in the stadium, and the Everton fans produced a magnificent welcome for their team.

We have the two starting XIs for this potentially emotional Merseyside derby, and there are no real shocks.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin remains out, so Beto leads the line, but Vitaliy Mykolenko returns from injury.

Deadline day signing Carlos Alcaraz is also among the substitutes.

For Liverpool, there are wholesale changes from the weekend's defeat as Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk all return, among others.
