The last-ever Merseyside derby at Goodison Park ended in a dramatic 2-2 draw between Everton and Liverpool, but the real drama unfolded after the final whistle.
The match was marred by controversy, including a red card for Liverpool manager Arne Slot, which has sparked confusion over the length of his subsequent ban.
Arne Slot was sent off by referee Michael Oliver with the reason being that the Dutchman used “offensive, insulting, or abusive language” following the match.
Initially, it was reported that Slot would face a two-match touchline ban, which would keep him off the sidelines for Liverpool’s upcoming games against Wolves and Aston Villa.
However, the Premier League later deleted a statement confirming this ban, leaving uncertainty over Slot’s availability for the Wolves match.
The deletion of the Premier League’s statement has raised questions about whether Slot will indeed miss two games.
Typically, a red card for a manager results in a one-match ban, but the Premier League’s initial statement indicated a more severe punishment due to the nature of Slot’s comments.
The Football Association is expected to review the referee’s report before making a final decision, which may not be resolved before Liverpool’s next match.
Everton hits out at Virgil van Dijk
Virgil van Dijk was frustrated after the game and made no secret with a cup final jibe to Everton, saying post-match:
“In the end, it’s just very disappointing to concede at the last.”
“They’re very direct and fight for the first and second ball.
We all know this is their cup final and they will do everything in their power to try and win against us?
This year, you see them scoring at the end and it’s obviously a big boost for them but it’s a blow for us.”
Liverpool fans and officials are still reeling from the controversial decisions during the match, including the non-award of a foul on Konate in the build-up to Tarkowski’s goal.
Slot’s frustration was evident as he confronted the referee.
And taking to Instagram, Everton have added insult to injury with a jibe of their own, posting a video with the caption “Six more ‘finals’ left at Goodison,” while adding two emojis; a smirking face included:
Of course, this is referencing the fact that the Toffees only have six more games at Goodison Park this season before the switch to their new stadium.
