As Liverpool prepare to host Everton at Anfield on Wednesday, April 2, tensions remain high following February’s dramatic encounter that culminated in post-match chaos.
With Everton enjoying a remarkable resurgence under David Moyes and Liverpool looking to bounce back from consecutive setbacks, it certainly seems that we could have another derby to remember.
The memory of February’s events at Goodison Park remains fresh for both teams.
James Tarkowski’s thunderous 98th-minute equalizer sparked bedlam in what was the final Merseyside derby at Everton’s historic home ground, with scores of fans spilling onto the pitch amid jubilant celebrations.
What followed, however, overshadowed the result itself.
After the final whistle, a melee erupted between both sets of players, triggered when Abdoulaye Doucouré celebrated in front of the Liverpool supporters section.
Curtis Jones took exception to this, resulting in a confrontation that required security intervention.
The incident led referee Michael Oliver to issue four red cards – to Doucouré, Jones, Liverpool manager Arne Slot, and his assistant Sipke Hulshoff.
While Liverpool remains comfortably atop the Premier League table with a 12-point advantage over Arsenal, recent results have dented their momentum in cup competitions.
The Reds suffered elimination from the Champions League on March 12, losing on penalties to Paris Saint-Germain after a 1-1 aggregate draw over two legs.
Just four days later, they endured further disappointment at Wembley, relinquishing their Carabao Cup title with a 2-1 defeat to Newcastle United, where Alexander Isak was among the scorers for the Magpies.
This marked the first time under Slot that Liverpool had lost consecutive matches.
But ahead of the clash, it seems one Everton star has picked up an injury that could rule him out of contention.
Vitalii Mykolenko sustained a thigh injury during Ukraine’s 3-0 Nations League defeat to Belgium on Sunday.
The defender was forced off in the 67th minute after requiring medical attention and could not continue.
Ukraine manager Serhiy Rebrov confirmed the seriousness of the injury, stating Mykolenko would undergo an MRI scan to assess the extent of the damage.
“Unfortunately, he has an injury, he will do an MRI, we’ll see,” Rebrov was quoted as saying by the Ukraine Football Federation’s website.
“I know Vitalii.
If he didn’t continue playing, then the injury was really serious.”
Meanwhile, Ukraine news hub Zorya Londonsk revealed what the Everton man said to them in the mixed news zone after the clash:
“Mykolenko confirms to us in the mixed zone that it’s a thigh injury he picked up today?
He will wait and see the seriousness of it when he returns to Everton tomorrow.”
The left-back has been ever-present for the Toffees this season, making 29 appearances across all competitions while chipping with 2 assists.
