As Arne Slot embarked on his inaugural summer as Liverpool head coach following Jürgen Klopp’s departure, the Reds prioritized streamlining their squad through a mix of permanent sales, loan moves, and contract expirations.
The headline sale saw Fabio Carvalho join Brentford in a deal structured around an initial £22.5 million, potentially reaching £27.5 million with performance-related bonuses.
The Portuguese midfielder, once hailed as a future star, sought regular playing time elsewhere.
However, it has been a bit of a struggle for Carvalho so far having been left out of Thomas Frank’s last few Premier League squads.
Another high-profile sale saw Sepp van den Berg depart for Brentford in a deal worth £25 million, potentially rising to £30 million with add-ons.
The Dutch defender, who spent multiple seasons on loan across Europe, finally secured a permanent move after failing to break into the first team at Anfield.
Brentford’s willingness to meet Liverpool’s valuation reflected Van den Berg’s potential, with the Reds netting a substantial profit on the £4.4 million paid to PEC Zwolle in 2019.
And it seems that Van Den Berg has certainly thought a lot on his Liverpool departure since the summer.
Speaking to Dutch outlet Voetbal Primeur (via Sport Witness), Sepp van den Berg discussed how his exit was largely of his own doing, wanting to become a Premier League starter instead of a rotational option for Liverpool:
“I had a few conversations with Slot.
But before the preparation started, I already indicated to the club that I wanted to leave and play minutes,” he said about the summer move.
He then admitted that a future return was still in his head:
“I would be lying if I said that I did not dream of returning to Liverpool one day.
After the pre-season, Liverpool indicated that I had done so well that they wanted me to stay.
It was all my choice; I am happy that I now play in the Premier League every week.”
Sepp van den Berg.
I am now a starter who always plays as long as he is fit.
“At Liverpool I would have been more of a player who had to fill in gaps
And who knows, if I do well here for two or three years, I will return to Liverpool and be a starter there too.”
Van den Berg has thrived at Brentford this season, making 21 Premier League appearances and cementing his place as a key player under Thomas Frank.
