Liverpool will be looking to retain its Carabao Cup title when it takes on Newcastle later this month — and it's not an altogether unfamiliar trip for the Magpies either, after they contested the final in 2023.

History is starting to repeat itself for Eddie Howe, however, with a red card already wreaking havoc with his plans.

While Liverpool had a rare weekend off, Newcastle played a gruelling and ultimately fruitless 120 minutes against Brighton in the fifth round of the FA Cup.



Barely featuring on the radar of English football fans since his nightmare for Liverpool in the Champions League final, he had become the third-choice stopper at Newcastle in a lowkey deal, but suddenly found himself back in the spotlight.

Liverpool and Newcastle supporters alike feared the worst.

Former Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius acquitted himself well when Newcastle faced Man United in the 2023 Carabao Cup final.

Karius did sign a new one-year deal with Newcastle at the end of that season, but only played once more — a 4-1 defeat to Arsenal the following season

But it's nice to see that he has earned some kind of redemption, with that final for Newcastle perhaps the start of the process.
