Football Association (FA) documents have revealed that Liverpool manager Arne Slot narrowly avoided a more severe punishment for his conduct following the heated Merseyside derby on February
The FA confirmed that an independent Regulatory Commission imposed the touchline suspension after reviewing the incident, which occurred amid chaotic scenes following James Tarkowski’s 98th-minute equalizer for Everton.
Slot was absent from the touchline for Liverpool’s home win against Newcastle United last Wednesday night, and will be Premier League fixture against Southampton at Anfield on March 8.
Importantly for Liverpool’s European campaign, the ban applies only to domestic matches, meaning Slot will be permitted in the technical area when his team visits Paris Saint-Germain for their Champions League Round of 16 clash tomorrow evening.
There was plenty of outcry from the Liverpool fanbase over the fact that Arne Slot was getting punished in the first place.
But it now has emerged that the FA took a more lenient approach to the ban imposed on the Dutchman.
Releasing the full statement and report on the matter, the FA document outlined why they opted to give Arne Slot reduced sanctions:
“AS (Arne Slot) apologised but most notably, he also apologised and made reference to his own behaviour during a broadcast of a pre-match conference (it should be noted that the
Commission took a positive interest in this given AS showed contrition and went over and above what we usually see from Managers in such circumstances)”
They then explain that they could have given a 3-game ban with a 100,000 ban but settled on a 2-game ban with a 70,00 0 fine:
“Given the above, had it not been for the mitigating factors, the Commission would have imposed a 3-match suspension as well as a fine commensurate with AS’ salary.
“However, given the mitigating factors, the Commission was minded to reduce the sanction to a 2 match suspension and impose a fine of £70,000, having reduced that figure from £100,000
as a result of applying credit for AS’ mitigation.”
However, the financial penalty of £70,000 represents one of the largest fines imposed on a Premier League manager this season, reflecting the seriousness with which the Commission viewed Slot’s post-match conduct.
