Real Madrid must inform Liverpool when it has agreed to terms with Trent Alexander-Arnold if it can convince the Reds star to ditch Merseyside for the Spanish capital.

The 26-year-old has been subject to plenty of interest this season due to his contract expiring at the end of the 2024/25 campaign.

While Liverpool had hoped to convince Alexander-Arnold to remain with his boyhood club, Real Madrid is now reportedly continuing to work on landing the Reds right back.

On Tuesday morning, the Athletic's David Ornstein reported that Real had been monitoring Alexander-Arnold for two years and working on a move since January.

FIFA regulations state that should a club intend to "conclude a contract with a professional" it must inform the player's current club "in writing before entering into negotiations with him."

That would mean due to the nature of the talks surrounding Alexander-Arnold's future, Real Madrid must have informed Liverpool of its intentions to sign the right-back, whom it views as a top target for the summer.

While Liverpool look on course to win the Premier League this season in Arne Slot's debut campaign, an incredible feat, they also look set to head into the summer amidst a fog of uncertainty when it comes to the make-up of the Reds squad.

Alongside Alexander-Arnold, Mohamed Salah and captain Virgil van Dijk are both out of contract too.

Salah, Van Dijk, and Alexander-Arnold are all out of contract in the summer.

Salah, 32, has been in the form of his life this season for the Reds, having scored 27 goals and registered 17 assists in 29 Premier League matches this term.

The trio have all been offered extensions to remain at Anfield but it is unclear just how far apart they are when it comes to negotiations.

Following the Reds Champions League exit to Paris Saint-Germain earlier this month, Van Dijk said of his future: "I’ve no idea [on his future]

"I still have no idea at the moment
