Fabrizio Romano has revealed what Liverpool can expect should they look to make a move for Dutch international Xavi Simons this summer.
The 21-year-old attacking midfielder has emerged as one of Europe’s most coveted young talents – with his transfer story set to be a major one for this summer.
Liverpool’s interest of Simons dates back to at least last summer, and it seems that we could be braced for more news on that front in the coming months.
What makes this transfer situation particularly intriguing is how complicated the player’s movments have been across Europe in recent years.
After having the player on loan for 18 months, Leipzig finalized a permanent transfer from Paris Saint-Germain in January 2025 for a club-record fee of €81 million (comprising €50 million base fee plus €31 million in performance-related add-ons).
However, just months after completing this permanent deal, Leipzig appear open to selling Simons, having reportedly lowered their initial €100 million asking price to approximately €80 million.
This quick turnaround has raised eyebrows across European football.
The backstory of this situation is even more complex.
According to some of reports, Leipzig and PSG had actually planned this permanent transfer 18 months ago, but were forced to delay due to a clause in Simons’ contract with PSV Eindhoven.
This clause, which gave PSV the right to claim 100% of any transfer fee if Simons was sold, only expired in January 2025, allowing the permanent transfer to Leipzig to finally proceed.
And now according to Romano, the Leipzig seem ready to part ways with the Dutchman to avoid having to pay the add-ons and to actually make a profit from the sale.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Liverpool have asked to be ‘informed’ on the 21-year-old’s situation this summer among a host of other Premier League sides:
“There are movements and my understanding is that for something around let’s say 70 to 75 million Euros [£58-63m], there is a chance to strike a deal for Xavi Simons,” he said.
“Xavi Simons has concrete possibilities of leaving Red Bull Leipzig already in this summer transfer window,” he says.
“It’s not guaranteed, but it’s a concrete possibility.”
“The Premier League is the most concrete possibility.
What we can mention is that Premier League clubs were interested one year ago,” Romano adds.
“Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester United, also Liverpool are well informed on the situation?
All of these clubs are calling to be informed.”
Whether the Reds can fend off competition from other European heavyweights remains to be seen, but their long-standing interest and Dutch connections could prove decisive in this high-profile transfer saga.
